HEC Appreciated Efforts of USAID for Improving Access to HE in Pakistan

The Higher Education Commission has approved scholarships for 201 needy students from rural areas of Pakistan under USAID funded Merit and Needs-based Scholarships. The meeting was convened on 14th February 2012 and presided over by Prof Dr. Sohail H Naqvi, Executive Director Higher Education Commission.
The selected students are studying at Institute of Management Science (IMS) Peshawar, Baluchistan University of Information Technology and Management Sciences (BUITEMS), University of Agriculture (UAF) Faisalabad, Sindh Agriculture University (SAU), Tandojam and Agriculture University Peshawar.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof .Dr. Sohail H Naqvi expressed his gratitude to USAID for providing Merit and Needs based Scholarships that helped HEC for improving equitable access toward higher education. Dr. Naqvi also stressed on the better communication & outreach activities and alumni relationship to generate funds for scholarships. He reiterated that Financial Aid Office should work hard and involve the local community to strengthen the philanthropic system.
Ms. Jo Lesser-Oltheten, USAID Education Office Director, said that this scholarship program is an excellent opportunity for the talented yet needy students from the remote areas of Pakistan especially for females. Moreover she added that USAID is committed to help Pakistan in the higher education with scholarships and assistance for building future of Pakistan.
Prof Dr. Riaz H Qureshi, Adv (HRD), Eng Farooq Bazai, Vice Chancellor , BUITEMS, Quetta ; Prof A. Q. Mughal, Vice Chancellor SAUT, and representatives from Institute of Management science (IMS) Peshawar, Baluchistan University of Information Technology and Management Sciences (BUITEMS), University of Agriculture (UAF) Faisalabad Sindh Agriculture University (SAU) Tandojam, and officials of Project Management Unit attended the meeting.

USAID-funded Merit and Needs based Scholarship Program that provides scholarships for talented but needy students pursuing higher education at 11 Pakistani universities in the field of Business Administration and Agricultural Sciences at undergraduate and graduate level. 1606 needy students have received scholarships, while more than 1000 students have completed their education under the program .The program has also supported establishment of University Advancement office at HEC and partner institutions.
